They were unlike most other world coinage that generally features the current head of state; the States of Guernsey (the local government) used a strictly Guernesiais motif, hence the ancient seal of King Edward I given to the island in 1279 that featured on the Doubles. The original seal bore the three lions of England, crowned later to become leopards, surmounted by a branch to represent broom or 'planta genista', Edward's badge of rank. Above the seal was 'Guernesey' in French, the legal and everyday language of the island at that time.
The historic Guernesey double design features on the obverse side the royal seal of King Edward I, given to the island of Guernsey in 1279; the reverse features the coin denomination, the year of minting and the purity mark.

Victor Hugo left France in 1851 for the nearby Channel Islands that welcomed him to its shores for an exile that would last 19 years, after a short period of living in Jersey he came to Guernsey. During his fifteen-year residency the island was to play a major part in inspiring many of his major works including Les Miserables. To celebrate this historic event the mint have produced Victor Hugo gold coins. The front of the coin depicts in relief the bust of the great man and the reverse side in relief a map of the Channel Islands with the outline of France and England both sides have Hugo's signature and famous quotes he made about the islands in French and English. On the front of the coin the French text reads "When Liberty Returns, I Shall Return" and the reverse side "The Channel Islands Are Fragments Of France Which Fell Into The Sea And Were Gathered Up By England".
